The Parable of Two Strangers — Even Short Stories Can Teach Us Something
Sometimes, the people we almost overlook are the ones who surprise us the most. We often imagine that meeting the right person should feel obvious. There should be an instant connection, effortless conversation, and a feeling that somehow you have known each other forever.
But real life doesn’t always work that way.
Sometimes a meaningful connection begins with an ordinary conversation. Sometimes the person you almost swiped past turns out to be the one you remember for years.
There is an old story about a young woman who learned exactly that. We hope this short parable will inspire you to keep going.
One day, a young woman asked an old gardener:
“Why do I keep meeting the wrong people?”
The gardener smiled.
“And who are you looking for?”
“Someone I can feel comfortable with. Someone who feels like my person from the very beginning.”
The gardener picked up two seeds and placed them in her hand.
“Which one would you choose?”
“I don’t know. They look exactly the same.”
“Exactly,” he said. “You want to know what a person will become before you give them the chance to show you.”
A few days later, the woman returned.
“I met someone,” she said. “At first, I thought he was completely uninteresting. I almost walked away. But then we started talking, and somehow we talked until morning.”
The gardener smiled.
“Some people are like flowers. You notice their beauty immediately. Others are like trees. You need to stay a little longer to discover what they have to offer.”
The woman thought for a moment.
“So should I give everyone a chance?”
“No,” the gardener replied. “You should give yourself a chance to get to know someone. But you never have to stay where you feel unhappy.”
Then he added:
“Meeting someone is not destiny. It is simply a door. And whether you open it is always up to you.”
The Lesson
Dating isn’t about giving everyone a chance. It’s about not deciding someone’s entire story from the first few seconds. A profile photo, a first message, or even an awkward first date can only show you a tiny part of a person.
Some connections are instant. Others need a little time to grow. And sometimes, the most interesting story begins with the person you almost didn’t notice.
