What to Do Before You Meet
First dates are always exciting and a little nerve-racking.

You never know how they’ll go or where they’ll lead. But one thing is certain: good preparation can make the experience much more enjoyable.
Here’s a simple checklist to help you feel confident, stay safe, and avoid unnecessary stress before your first date.
1. Check Who You’re Meeting
Before agreeing to meet in person, try to have at least one or two video calls. Take a look at their social media profiles and, if something feels off, do a quick reverse image search on their photos. It’s a simple way to verify that the person is who they claim to be.
If someone refuses every video call or insists on meeting after only a few minutes of chatting, that’s a red flag. Trust your instincts. Sometimes the best decision is to “swipe left”.

2. Choose the Right Place
Always arrange the first date in a public place.
Double-check the address, opening hours, and how long it will take you to get there. If you’re planning to visit a restaurant, cinema, or exhibition, book in advance whenever possible.
Arriving on time makes a great first impression. If you’re running late, send a quick message — it shows respect for the other person’s time.
3. Dress for the Occasion
Choose an outfit that suits the location and makes you feel comfortable and confident. You don’t need a formal dress for a coffee date or high heels for a long walk — especially if you’re not used to wearing them.
Looking neat, comfortable, and authentically yourself is always more attractive than trying too hard.

4. Charge Your Phone
Make sure your phone is fully charged before leaving. Have internet access or download directions in advance.
If you’re meeting someone you don’t know well, tell a friend or family member where you’re going. Share the person’s phone number, meeting location, or even the license plate if you’re getting into their car.
A little caution never hurts.
5. Don’t Forget the Basics
Fresh breath, clean clothes, and good personal hygiene matter.
You don’t need to look perfect — just show that you’ve made an effort. Besides, when you feel fresh and well-groomed, you’ll naturally feel more confident.

6. Think About Conversation Topics
It’s helpful to think of a few conversation starters before the date.
You could talk about:
- hobbies
- travel
- favorite food
- books and movies
- dreams and future goals
- daily routines
- favorite places in your city
On a first date, it’s usually best to avoid politics, religion, ex-partners, or overly personal questions.
7. Keep Your Expectations Realistic
Remember — it’s just one date, not an interview for the role of your future spouse. Focus on getting to know the person instead of deciding whether they’re “The One.”
The less pressure you put on yourself, the more natural and enjoyable the conversation will be.

8. Bring a Good Mood
If you’ve had a terrible day, it might be better to reschedule than to force yourself through the date. First impressions matter, and your mood often sets the tone for the entire evening.
Smile, be yourself, stay curious, and treat the date as an opportunity to meet someone new — not as a test you have to pass. Interestingly, every time we tell someone our story, we also learn a little more about ourselves.
The best first dates aren’t perfect. They’re comfortable, genuine, and leave you hoping for a second one. ❤️
