Not Every Match Is a Red Flag — Here Are 10 Green Flags to Look For on a Dating App

Dating apps can sometimes feel like a giant collection of red flags. One-word answers. Empty profiles. Endless “Hey” messages. Photos that look like they were taken ten years ago. People who disappear for days and then suddenly come back as if nothing happened.
We’ve already talked about online dating red flags and all the things that can make online dating frustrating. But let’s be honest — we can’t spend all our time looking for what’s wrong.
There are good signs too. A thoughtful message. A profile that actually tells you something about the person. Someone who asks questions, remembers what you said and doesn’t make you feel like you have to decode every interaction.

Here are 10 green flags worth noticing on a dating app.
1. Their Profile Actually Says Something
You don’t have to read a five-page biography. But a few specific details about their hobbies, personality, everyday life or interests are a good sign. It gives you a glimpse of a real person instead of a completely empty profile.
2. They Say What They’re Looking For
“Looking for something serious.” “Open to meeting someone and seeing where it goes.” “Here for a relationship.” Whatever their intention is, being reasonably clear about it can save both people a lot of confusion. You may want completely different things — and that’s okay. The green flag is clarity, not necessarily having the same goal.

3. Their Photos Look Like the Same Person
You can see their face clearly, there are several recent-looking photos, and the pictures show different parts of their life rather than ten almost identical selfies. Authenticity is much more attractive than a perfectly curated mystery.
4. They Actually Read Your Profile
Instead of sending a generic “Hey, how are you?”, they mention something you wrote about yourself. Maybe they ask about the hiking trip in your photos, comment on your strange obsession with Italian food or ask about the book you mentioned. It shows they didn’t just swipe on autopilot.

5. They Ask Questions — And Listen to the Answers
A good conversation shouldn’t feel like an interview where you’re doing all the work. They show curiosity about your life, but they also respond to what you actually say instead of immediately turning the conversation back to themselves. Extra green flag: they remember something you mentioned earlier.
6. They Don’t Rush the Connection
A few good conversations don’t have to become “I think you’re the one” overnight. Someone who lets things develop naturally can be much easier to get to know than someone who immediately wants constant contact, intense declarations or a relationship before you’ve even met.

7. They Make an Effort to Keep the Conversation Going
You don’t have to carry the entire chat. They start the conversation, respond with more than one word and contribute their own stories and questions. The effort feels mutual rather than like you’re trying to revive a conversation every few hours. That kind of reciprocity and follow-through is one of the more online dating green flags to watch for.
8. They Respect Your Boundaries
You don’t want to move to WhatsApp yet? Fine. You’re not ready for a phone call? No worries. You’d rather meet in a public place? No problem.
A person doesn’t have to agree with every preference you have to respect it. The green flag is that you can say what you’re comfortable with without being pressured, guilt-tripped or mocked.

9. They Don’t Turn Every Conversation Sexual
Flirting can be fun. Attraction is part of dating. But if every conversation somehow ends up being about sex, despite the fact that you’re trying to get to know each other, that’s not exactly a great sign. Someone who can flirt and have a normal conversation is generally much easier to get to know.
10. Their Online Behaviour Matches Their Words
They say they’re interested — and actually respond. They suggest meeting — and follow through. They say they’re busy — and later get back to you. They don’t constantly disappear, return with a dramatic explanation and start the whole cycle again. Anyone can say the right things. Consistency is where you start seeing whether the words mean anything.

Green Flags Are Patterns, Not Proof
A good profile doesn’t guarantee a good relationship. A thoughtful opening message doesn’t tell you everything about a stranger. And someone can have an almost perfect dating profile and still simply not be right for you.
Green flags are better used as positive signals, not guarantees. Look for consistency. Notice whether effort goes both ways. Pay attention to how someone responds when you say no, disagree with them or simply take your time.

And most importantly, don’t forget that dating isn’t only about finding reasons to reject people. Sometimes it’s about noticing when someone is quietly doing things right.
