Some stories reveal a simple truth we’ve always known deep down.

The Parable of the Two Cups - man and his teacher are sitting at the table

This short parable isn’t just about love. It’s about self-worth, emotional readiness, and the space we create for meaningful relationships. Sometimes, the strongest connections come from becoming the kind of person who has room for love.

Take a moment to read this story. Its message may stay with you longer than you expect.

One day, a young student came to an old master and asked,

“How do I know when I’ve found the person I’m meant to spend my life with?”

Without saying a word, the master placed two empty cups on the table. He filled the first cup with tea until it overflowed. Then he poured tea into the second cup, stopping when it was only half full.

“Which cup would you choose?” the master asked.

“The second one,” the student replied. “It still has room.”

The master smiled.

“Most people enter relationships like the first cup. They are already overflowing — with expectations, fears, old wounds, past disappointments, and a long list of who their perfect partner should be. When love finally arrives, there is simply no room left for it.”

He gently lifted the second cup.

“This cup knows it isn’t full yet. It has space for new experiences, new habits, compromise, growth, and surprise.”

The student thought for a moment.

“So I should become an empty cup?”

The master shook his head.

“No. An empty cup waits for someone else to fill it. That is another form of dependence.”

He took a sip of tea before continuing.

“Become a cup that already holds something valuable — self-respect, inner peace, curiosity, and a life you genuinely enjoy. But always leave room for another person. Love should never replace who you are. It should simply find a place beside the life you’ve already built.”

From that day on, the student stopped searching for someone to make him happy. Instead, he began creating a life that was already full — yet still had room for one more. And only then did love knock on his door.
